Musicians in Lockdown: Eternal Closure Interview

Eternal Closure metalcore

Canadian six-piece band Eternal Closure are rising through the pandemic with their blend of metalcore, progressive metal and djent (as well as their conspicuous love for cats). Menacing riffage and pummeling beats flow naturally into musing melodies and dreamy harmonies for track “The Slave or the Owner”. Subtle cat euphemisms add light humor to what is otherwise some brutally heavy listening.

Lead guitarist Olivier Boitel discussed the band’s recent activity and inspiration with The Outer Void:

What have you been up to during the pandemic?

Some lineup changes, an album re-release and a lot of new material written. All things considered we have kept quite busy. Overall though, it hasn’t been as bad for us as it may have been for others.

Has the lockdown impacted your songwriting this year in any way?

2020 in general has been great inspiration. Personally, I have been learning quite a lot of where I place myself in the world and that has definitely changed the way I write lyrics a bit. Also the material is a bit heavier and darker overall.

What’s your favorite show you’ve ever played?

Our first album release for “Screaming In Silence” was incredible and I’ll never forget it. We didn’t even play that well but the whole vibe was just incredible and we gave a hell of a show.

If you could tour with any band/artist, who would it be?

At the moment, many members of the band have fallen in love with the band Currents. They’re great and they fit the music that we play quite nicely. Would make for a great show. And then you add bands like Architects or Periphery and you have the best show ever essentially haha. Joking of course but it would be a blast.

What 2020 album would you recommend to someone who believes there’s no good new music?

Like mentioned before, Currents’ “The Way It Ends” is our collective best album of the year. Personally I really really liked “The Oubliette” by a band call The Reticent. It’s a pretty special mix of sounds for fans of things like Opeth, Katatonia and Between The Buried and Me. Check it out!

What are your plans for 2021?

We have a new album in the works. Can’t reveal too much at the moment, but it’s what will keep us busy for the year. It’s cliche to say, but I really do feel like the new material is really strong. Our new members (Maggy, Phil and Marine) all bring something new to our sound and I can’t wait to show it to people!
