Musicians in Lockdown: Venus Fly Trap Interview

Long-time artist Alex Novak has been providing his multifaceted creations for the music industry for decades. He has expressed his voice through several projects over the years, but is now focused on his post-punk and electronica band Venus Fly Trap. Producing an aural kaleidoscope of tones, they present each tune through prismatic soundscapes that mesmerize their listeners.

Alex Novak discusses his recent activity in lockdown with Venus Fly Trap:

What have you been up to during the pandemic?

Basically trying to keep afloat. I run a shop Spiral Archive Records which is back again in lockdown, so doing more internet sales which has taken more of my time. Obviously no gigs for the band and I promote gigs and DJ, and I also go to see a lot of bands. That’s all ground to a halt so nada social life. But in 2020 released Venus Fly Trap/Alex Novak-Mercurial CD/DL (Glass Records Modern) which is a career-spanning retrospective taking in VFT and all the bands and projects I have been involved with over the years, which means I have been doing interviews and generally promoting the release.

Has the lockdown impacted your songwriting this year in anyway?

Well yes, we have just have gone into stasis, without gigs we haven’t been rehearsing, but recently we have started working on a couple of new tracks that should be released later this year.

What 2020 album would you recommend to someone who believes theres no good new music?

Well check out Squid, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Future Islands and Slaves to name a few…

What are your plans for 2021?

Have a release coming out in March, Venus Fly Trap Time Lapse 1989-1994 (Glass Records Modern). It’s a selection of tracks collected from the albums Totem, Pandoras Box, and Luna Tide, placed together as a possible alternative album in this alternate reality. But just out at the moment is the single “Achilles Heel” available as a download via Glass Records.
