English electronic virtuosos The Ocean Beneath will take you to a new dimension in outer space with their ’80s-inspired atmospheric allure. From astral synths and lo-fi beats to haunting vocals and hypnotic effects, your state of mind will travel across galaxies with just one listen. Their otherworldly aura finely illustrates a feeling of isolation that swiftly yet subtly draws you in, entrancing your psyche before you can even acknowledge your own level of engagement.
The Ocean Beneath sat down with The Outer Void to discuss their activity in lockdown and their inspiration drawn from it:
What have you been up to during the pandemic?
We’ve been making music during this weird time — in fact we just launched our new single “Skin” ft. Fran Minney. There’s a video over on YouTube and we’re super proud of how it turned out.
Has the lockdown impacted your songwriting this year in any way?
I think with the pandemic everything we do is affected, probably moreso at a subconscious level but it certainly feels that way. In terms of songwriting I think people are bringing out more raw emotion, people miss each other and it shows. Fran’s lyrics in “Skin” really reflect this with “I die a little each time, let me drown in this night.”
What’s your favorite show you’ve ever played?
Live shows are a bit of a raw subject, we had every intention of taking out the project live this year and unfortunately, corona.
If you could tour with any band/artist, who would it be?
Would have to be Daft Punk I think, everything they’ve ever done is just gold and the rare live shows they have played looked unreal.
What 2020 album would you recommend to someone who believes there’s no good new music?
There’s so much good music coming out right now it’s hard to pick, but this year I’d say go check out Juno Arcade’s self-titled album and my personal favourite, Music Not Safari by The Emperor Machine. That record is a real tribute to the ’80s and has huge synthesizers throughout whilst having a super modern production and being fat A F.
What are your plans for 2021?
I think the future for us is to push our new single “Skin” for the rest of the year then come back early next year with the collaborations we’re currently working on. Go have a listen to “Skin” ft. Fran Minney and check out the video over on YouTube, thanks for your time.
