British rock quintet Trash Boat continue to transcend modern pop punk with their new single “He’s So Good”. After the success of their last album, 2018’s Crown Shyness, this track shows that was only the beginning of many intense anthems to come. It maintains the punchy, in-your-face melodies that make them stand out while placing their hardcore-inspired edge under a new light.

The song tackles the important issue of homophobia in a family setting. Vocalist Tobi Duncan explained in his interview with Kerrang! Magazine:

I want people to be able to use this topic as a point of pride, and allow the music to make them feel confident and heard. This is about reminding people that they’re not responsible for other people’s prejudices. When I think about sexuality, I consider it to be something that’s a transcendental part of human identity — all it really means is to be known. It’s not complicated, and it’s only made that way when people project their own insecurities onto others.”

Duncan ends each chorus with the highest notes we have heard from him yet, while racing drums and menacing guitars emphasize his impassioned delivery. The verses alternate among frail murmurs, weary falsettos and exasperated screams, executing every shade of emotion felt. Lines like “His father so austere, his boy’s a fucking queer” backed by raging instrumentals are brutally honest about the level of hate that has been inherited over generations. As if the last album didn’t hit hard enough, Trash Boat have proven they still have plenty more fuel to add to their rebellious fire.
