Los Angeles guitarist and singer-songwriter Dkupe directs us towards the light at the end of our evolving society’s tunnel with his new track “Changes.” Through a charismatic blend of funk, rock, soul and blues, he encourages people to take the necessary steps towards reaching our highest potential as a loving and peaceful collective. Each lyric is a chant against all forms of discrimination, while accentuating the power we share to build a better world.
The song was originally written back in June during the peak of nationwide protests against George Floyd’s murder, which Dkupe was actively participating in throughout LA. As the rising awareness and subversion spread through the streets, he began reflecting on how people are becoming more educated about the deeper issues that have been neglected for generations.
Dkupe explains his inspiration behind the track:
“As the most tumultuous year in recent history comes to a close, the people are ready for changes, real changes. It seems more apparent now than ever that the real changes won’t be brought in by the promises of those in the highest positions of power, but that they will come from us, the people, standing together and demanding a vision for the future based on love, compassion, and acceptance. “Changes” is an affirmation that ultimately love will pave the way forward, as long as we ourselves commit to see this way through. As darker times have illuminated the ways that society still needs to grow, we must trust our better selves to pave that way forward with love and conviction.”
Musically, the track has a natural groove that flows with choppy, rhythmic guitar chords, jazzy basslines, dazzling keyboards and hand claps. The innate yet zestful fusion of tones complement the vocals to create a cheerful, breezy drift that quickly gets stuck in your head. On top of all that, the trumpet solo from Issce Gonzalez and guitar solo from Derex Williams fit in effortlessly.
Dkupe will release his first official EP in 2021, featuring even more fun collaborations. Check out the video for “Changes” below, and stream Dkupe on Spotify and Apple Music!
