Musicians in Lockdown: Emily Daccarett

Emily Daccarett

If you want to get lost for a while in trippy soundscapes and entrancing effects, give Los Angeles alternative pop artist Emily Daccarett a listen. On her first EP Cannibal, dazzling guitars are blended finely into ambient layers of synths, arranged in way that accents the unique timbre of her vocals. Evoking images of neon lights in dusky surroundings, Daccarett delivers each line like a mysterious figure in the shadows that you can’t help but get immersed in.

Emily Daccarett discussed her recent activity and influences with The Outer Void:

What have you been up to during the pandemic?

I have been finally getting to projects I never had any time for and most importantly working on my new album scheduled to release in January 2021. Keeping busy has helped me stay sane.

Has the lockdown impacted your songwriting this year in any way?

I wrote my album during the lockdown, so it helped me stay focused and experiment with my songs.

What’s your favorite show you’ve ever played?

I started my career as a fashion designer and showed in Paris, New York and Los Angeles Fashion Week. It was with my shows, that I began to work on original music. Last November I released my debut EP, Cannibal, and it also served as an introduction to this new chapter in my life as a musical artist as well as designer. I only got to play one live gig in the Hollywood Hills and had to cancel all live gigs after because of the lockdown that followed shortly after my release. As of now, that’s my favorite show! It was in a beautiful castle-like house and we had an amazing view of the LA skyline. I got to perform my songs live for the first time and showcase my designs along with them.

If you could tour with any band/artist, who would it be?

Lana Del Rey! I love her form of storytelling with her music and she has a great nostalgic vibe to her shows.

What 2020 album would you recommend to someone who believes there’s no good new music?

I have been listening to mainly oldies and lo-fi. I’ve been using this time to reconnect with the artists that inspired me like David Bowie. As a big fan of animation, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, and The Weeknd are the only new music videos I’ve really enjoyed this year. I love the references to the Fleischer Studios (Betty Boop cartoons), Archie Comics, and anime in the “Smile” series music videos that Katy Perry did with her latest album.

What are your plans for 2021?

I’ll be doing live stream concerts for my new album and have some collaborations in the works.
