Musicians in Lockdown: Spacejam Interview

Spacejam indie pop rock

Swiss trio Spacejam blur the lines between indie and pop while applying inspiration from ’80s rock. Using chorus-charged riffs to complement uplifting vocal melodies, they’ll simultaneously take you back in time and to the moon. Their “weightless” approach to songwriting allows them to not get tied down by the constraints of genre, while encouraging listeners to let their minds roam freely.

Spacejam discuss their activity in lockdown and more with The Outer Void:

What have you been up to during the pandemic?

I worked a lot, wrote new songs. Like everyone else I think, I focused on my work as a musician and songwriter. As we couldn’t do anything more and we were forced to stay at home, we might as well take the opportunity to focus on my music. I also created our last video for our song Alive because the people we were supposed to do the music video with, ceased their activity due to this plandemie, so I had no other choice but to do everything myself and I must say i had a great time. I also learned to look for new information since the MSM does not give us any real and serious information on this plandemic and I noticed one thing, the more we look for information, the more we find, so yes we have to sort it out because there is also a lot of bullshit, but overall when journalists no longer do their job, other journalists do it. I realized that today in the information age, ignorance is a choice!

Has the lockdown impacted your songwriting this year in any way?

I wouldn’t say that this plandemic impacted the way I created, but rather that it allowed me to take more time to do things. I had more time to review the arrangements and the production of my songs because I always had a lot of songs in advance. And then also in March when it all started, nobody thought we would still be at the same point, so I hoped and kept working on my new songs. Today, after almost a year of lockdown and all this comedy about this so-called pandemic, I’m not in the same state of mind. I have new songs and my lyrics are not at all the same, now I want the whole world to wake up from this world dictatorship in which we have slipped very slowly. So yes, now this plandemic will radically change the direction of my work, I have too many friends whether in UK or elsewhere in the world who have lost everything in this crisis and I don’t want to be silent anymore, I owe them that!

What’s your favorite show you’ve ever played?

The best memory I have of our live shows is the one we did at the Zenith in Toulouse (southwest of France). Our tour manager at the time was crazy and smart enough to make sure that the Zenith was packed, at the time the maximum was 9000 people and that’s exactly the number of people who came at the show, it was incredible and very impressive at the same time. On the bill with us, there were 2 other bands and we had a lot of fun and the interaction with the crowd was impressive, it is an experience that will be etched deep inside of me forever.

If you could tour with any band/artist, who would it be?

I would love to tour with The Cure, because having been around them when I was younger, I remember the very special atmosphere of being part of “the family”. Humanly and musically I would love to share this slice of life on the road with Robert Smith and his whole gang! The level of demand and the quality of work he produces on stage is absolutely impressive and to be part of the adventure with them would be a pure moment of joy & happiness for me and the rest of the band.

What 2020 album would you recommend to someone who believes there’s no good new music?

I would highly recommend the latest Yungblud album weird! which is absolutely great. He is certainly a young artist but who has a crazy talent, and who has a very punchy musical universe. You can tell he’s a guy who has listened to a lot of good music in his life and who has a very good sense of lyrics. This guy is crazy and so current, his music speaks to young people of his generation but not only. I love this guy.

What are your plans for 2021?

My plans for 2021 are to continue to practice my craft and release new songs and videos. I would also like the world to wake up and fight to regain its freedoms. It’s fascism or freedom and it’s now and not tomorrow! I will use my weapons which are my music and my lyrics to do this. Music for me is the bearer of hope, love, lightness, joy, happiness, disillusionment, revolution … And today I find that music is sorely lacking in revolution and it’s in this direction that I want to carry my message.
