Australian progressive metalcore outfit Northlane have put out a new single off their upcoming album Alien, out on August 2nd. The song takes a dark nu metal dive into domestic abuse and drug addiction, and the morbid video intensifies the tragic message. It is a compelling blend of breakdowns and electronics that has set high hopes for the fifth record.
The lyrics tell a story of growing up in a broken, abusive household. There is something gripping about the chorus and the way vocalist Marcus Bridge sings “I was raised in hell / I made it out by myself / I was raised to bleed / Bad blood runs wild and free.” Although haunting and melodic, it not only maintains the heaviness of the screamed sections and breakdowns – it takes it in a new direction that accentuates the track’s dark mood, giving the listener a thrilling ride. One of the verses seems to describe finding a family member high on heroin, singing “I thought you were dreaming / Eyes rolled to the stars / Sinking slowly in muddy water”, which really paints quite a bleak picture in your head. Before even releasing the album, Northlane have already proven how unafraid they are to be blunt and straightforward with the stories they are about to tell.
Bridge has opened up about the lyrics, stating “I was raised in hell but I made it out. Raised in a place I shouldn’t have been, and no child should have been. But I’ve been able to break free.” This tragic backstory definitely makes “Bloodline” one of Northlane’s darkest and most brutally honest songs, making a promising impression for Alien.
